2 boys, aged eleven and 16 charged with assaulting elderly man

BATHURST, Central West, NSW, Australia – Two young boys, aged 11 and 16, appeared in Bathurst Children’s Country on Monday over charges they picked on a 74-year old man and tried to entice him into a fight.

When the man resisted and tried to walk away, the older boy tried to strike him with a stick, before throwing it at him.

A passers-by realised what was happening and came to the rescue of the man. At this point the two boys fled the scene.

The alleged assault took place on Thursday around 10:50am as the elderly man was taking a stroll through a park on Stanley Street, Bathurst.

Officers attached to Chifley Police District were notified of what happened and they began a search for the two juveniles.

About 2.15pm Thursday police arrested the 16-year-old at a shopping centre in Bathurst following a short foot pursuit.

The younger boy was arrested soon after in the rear yard of a business on Howick Street, Bathurst following a foot pursuit.

The pair were taken to Bathurst Police Station and charged in relation to the offence.

The 11-year-old was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, common assault and larceny. He was refused bail ahead of his court appearance on Monday.

The older boy was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and larceny. He was granted conditional bail ahead of his Monday court appearance.

The assault comes as news circulated on Monday that a 92-year old woman had been attacked in her home at Cowra in the early hours of Sunday morning, in what police believe was a home invasion. The woman awoke to find a man in her bedroom. .
