24-year old appears in Lithgow Court accused of starting bushfire

LITHGOW, Central West, NSW, Australia – A man appeared before the Lithgow District Court on Thursday over charges he deliberately started a bushfire.

The fire occurred 3 weeks ago on Wednesday 27 January in Portland, a town within the City of Lithgow, about 25 kilometres northwest of the CBD. The fire was reported by a man walking his dog at around 10:30am.

Emergency services were called to the scene and extinguished the fire.

No one was injured and no property was damaged.

Officers from Chifley Police District commenced an investigation into the circumstances as to how the fire started.

Following extensive inquiries, investigators arrested a 24-year-old man at a home in Ridge Street, Portland about 9.30am on Wednesday. Ridge Street is where the bushfire originated.

The man was taken to Lithgow Police Station, where he was charged with intentionally starting the fire and allowing it to spread..

The man was refused bail ahead of Wednesday’s court appearance.
