36-year old man injured in rock fall in Blue Mountains to have surgery

BLACKHEATH, Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia – A rock climber who was rescued from the Bellbird Wall at Pulpit Rock in Blackheath in the Blue Mountains on Saturday afternoon, has been trasnferred to Nepean Hospital.

The 36-year old man was intially taken to Katoomba Hospital by the Toll Ambulance Rescue Helicopter. He suffered a serious fracture to his lower left leg. Doctors later decided to move the man to Nepean to undergo surgery on his fractured leg.

The climber was injured around 2:00pm on Saturday afternoon when he slipped and fell 4 metres, landing heavily on a small rock ledge.

Blue Mountains Police Rescue, NSW Ambulance and Polair were soon on the scene.

Polair located the climber on the cliff and assisted rescue in determining the best route down to the climber.

A Police Rescue operator and an Ambulance Special Operation Paramedic then made there way down the 100 metre cliff through a series of rebelays, to the climber. He was treated then lowered another 40 metres to the base of the cliff.

Utilizing night vision goggles, the Toll Ambulance Rescue helicopter then carried out a low light winch to lift the climber out of the valley, and flew him to Katoomba hospital where he was treated until the move to Nepean Hospital.
