52-year old woman dies while cycling after colliding with utility

MUDGEE, Central West, NSW, Australia – A woman has died when the bicycle she was riding colided with a utility in the New South Wales Central West on Saturday.

The 52-year old woman was out cycling with a man. The pair were travelling west along Spring Creek Road, Yarrawonga, about 12km from Gulgong, near Mudgee when the woman’s bike collided with the ute. It is understood the woman died instantly.

The crash occurred around 9:00am Saturday.

The driver of the utility, a 39-year old man, was taken to hospital suffering from shock.

Officers from Orana Mid-Western Police District attended the scene, while officers from the Bathurst Crash Investigation Unit have intiated an investigation into the cause of the collision.

Police are urging anyone who witnessed the crash, or who may have dashcam footage, to come forward.

They are reminding everyone that there is a running festival being held on Sunday morning in the Mudgee area that will involve road diversions. Police are asking everyone to take care on the roads and be extra careful with runners and pedestrians on the roadway during the event.

Saturday’s fatality comes during Operation Chrome, an intense police operation to crack down on unsafe road practices such as speeding, drink driving, using mobile phones while driving, and not wearing seat belts. The aim of the operation, which began on Friday and runs until Sunday night, is to make drivers more aware of risks in an effort to offset the rising death toll on NSW roads.
