7 lives lost on NSW roads during Anzac weekend

Apr 30, 2019

Seven people lost their lives on NSW roads, two of them in the Central West, during the Anzac long-weekend's Operation Go Slow, the state’s road safety campaign.

Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander, Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy said the Easter and Anzac holiday break featured too many stories of good people making bad choices when they took control of a vehicle.

"Driving is a privilege, not a right and there were some people we detected across the holidays who need to accept this and know they will be held accountable for their actions," Assistant Commissioner Corboy said Monday.

19 people lost their lives in crashes on NSW roads during the school holidays.

Speeding was a major factor. 4,643 people were picked up for speeding.

548 people were charged with not wearing a seatbelt.

While 239,336 people were breath-tested, this resulted in only 261 being charged with drink-driving.

There were 145 serious crashes on state roads throughout the Anzac weekend.
