All access to Megalong Valley cut after road closure

Mar 23, 2021

BLACKHEATH, Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia – The Megalong Valley remains cut off following the closure of the Megalong Road.

The Blue Mountains Police Area Command is in contact with residents of the Megalong Valley directly, to see what assistance they need given the current extreme weather circumstances.

The small rural town with a population of less than 200 is located 12 km south of Blackheath railway station.

The Blue Mountains command says they are working with lead emergency agencies to get them the support they need and access as soon as possible.

Megalong Road remains closed due to a landslip caused by floodwaters.

A geotechnical engineer on Monday assessed the damage and the hard road closure needs to remain in place due to the potential further collapse of the road from ongoing rainfall.

Council will begin temporary works as soon as the rain stops. It is expected these temporary works, that aim to open one lane on the road, will take 2 to 4 days.

Permanent restoration of the road is expected to take weeks, given the damage.

Access to the valley

The Blue Mountains City Council Council says it is currently liaising with the State Emergency Service (SES) about whether access can be gained to the Megalong Valley despite the current road closure.

The SES is the lead agency, in the current emergency situation.

If access can be gained, Council will be able to provide a shuttle bus to possibly transport residents or supplies.

Access to Megalong Valley Hall

Council has opened Megalong Valley Community Hall for any resident, or visitor, who may need to take shelter.

Residents can contact Council’s Community Recovery Officer Rebecca Evers at revers@bmcc.nsw.gov.au to provide details of what assistance they need.

If residents need urgent assistance during this emergency please contact the SES on 13 25 00.

If there is life-threatening danger residents should contact 000.
