Arming Ukraine supported by 65% of Americans, says poll

Jul 3, 2023

NEW YORK CITY, New York: A Reuters survey reported that most Americans support providing weapons to Ukraine in its war against Russia.

Most also believed that such aid demonstrates to China and other rivals that the US will to protect its interests and allies remains strong.

The poll also showed a rise in backing the arming of Ukraine, with 65 percent of respondents in approval, compared with 46 percent in May.

It further showed that 81 percent of Democrats, 56 percent of Republicans and 57 percent of independents support supplying American weapons to Ukraine.

The results seemed to confirm that most Americans agree with US President Joe Biden’s policy of doing “whatever it takes” to assist Ukraine in recapturing territory that Russia seized in an initial assault in 2014, and its full-scale invasion 16 months ago.

“This definitely reinforces Biden’s decision to be all-in on this. The Republican leadership of the House and Senate will also take heart from this,” said William Taylor, former US ambassador to Ukraine.

Since Russian President Vladimir Putin launched what he claimed was a “special military operation” in February 2022, the Biden administration has approved 41 weapons packages worth more than $40 billion for Ukraine.

The online poll, which was conducted around the US, collected responses from 1,004 adults, including 400 Democrats and 383 Republicans, and found that 76 percent of Americans believe that providing aid to Ukraine shows to China and other rivals that the US has “the will and capability to protect our interests, our allies and ourselves.”
