Nov 9, 2018

KATOOMBA, Blue Mountains – There will be a number of White Ribbon events this month in the region including an information table at the Mid-Mountains Festival on 17 November.

The TAFE Welfare students are putting on an event on the Carrington Lawn on Wednesday 21 November, from 11.30 to 2.00pm.

And on Friday 23 November from 7:00am to 9:00am is the culmination, the White Ribbon Mayor’s Breakfast at the Katoomba Cultural Centre.

White Ribbon is an organisation that is a male-led campaign which operates in collaboration with, and alongside, many other organisations working to end men’s violence against women. Their focus and strength is in mobilising men and boys and communities to end men’s violence against women and girls.

Pictured is what is described as “A Few Good Men” event held at the Mid Mountains Neighbourhood Centre.

These six men from the Blue Mountains Area got together recently to make about 500 white ribbons attached to a business card with local services/phone numbers for women in distress.

These “few good men” were supported by BLINN Blue Mountains Lithgow Integrated Neighbourhood Network and CAVA Coalition Against Violence and Abuse.

Mick Barrett from Mid-Mountains Neighbourhood Centre, said that these White Ribbons are available at all the mountains Neighbourhood Centres, to men who support this campaign, to end men’s violence against women.

Michael Farrell-Whelan, a local White Ribbon Ambassador said that women continue to be abused by their partners or ex-partners, and there is a need for men to change their attitude towards power and control.
