Blue Mountains reels from freakish incident which killed woman

KATOOMBA, Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia – Officers from the Blue Mountains Police Area Command have begun an investigation into the freak tragedy which resulted in the death of a woman, and the hospitalisation of a man in Katoomba, in the Blue Mountains overnight.

A man in his 20s is being treated at Westmead Hospital. He is in serious condition with head and chest injuries.

His companion, a woman in her 40s died at the scene.

The drama began around 7:00pm on Thursday night when a tree apparently fell on top of a car in Victoria Street, Katoomba.

Emergency services were called to the scene just after seven o’clock. There they found the car, a Volvo sedan, underneath a large tree which had fallen over the top of it.

The car had two occupants, the woman who suffered fatal injuries, and a man who was trapped.

The man was freed in a rescue operation involving Police Rescue, Fire & Rescue NSW, and NSW Ambulance paramedics. He was airlifted to Westmead Hospital immediately after.

Victoria Street in Katoomba was closed in both directions for an extensive period while officers from the Blue Mountains Police Area Command began a forensics examination.
