Collision between truck and bus leaves 24-year man hospitalised

LAWSON, Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia – A 24-year old man remains in serious condition in Westmead Hospital after his truck towing a trailer collided with a bus at Lawson, in the New South Wales Blue Mountains on Wednesday.

The man was trapped in his truck for two hours following the collision and had to be extricated by officers from Police Rescue and NSW Fire & Rescue.

He was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being airlifted to Westmead Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

“The skills displayed in this multi-agency rescue demonstrate the ability of our rescue crews in what was described as a very technical rescue,” a statement from the Blue Mountains Police Area Command issued later on Wednesday said.

“We are pleased to advise that after tremendous efforts by Fire and Rescue, Ambulance NSW, Police Rescue, and the Toll Ambulance Rescue, the driver of the truck, who was trapped by confinement for two hours at the accident earlier today at Lawson, was released and flown to hospital in a stable condition with what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries,” the statement said.

The collision occurred around 7:30am Wednesday morning at the intersection of the Great Western Highway and Somers Street at Lawson.

A passenger in the truck suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

The driver of the bus, a 62-year-old man his sole passenger, a 12-year-old boy, also suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

Officers from the Blue Mountains Police Area Command attended and have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

As inquiries continue, officers are appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash, or has dashcam footage of the incident, to come forward.
