Dangerous driving near Springwood results in driver being assaulted

SPRINGWOOD, Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia – Police are investigating a serious of serious incidents that took place in the Blue Mountains on Friday night near Springwood.

Around 5:40pm on Friday night, the Police triple zero emergency service received several calls about a white Nissan Patrol and the manner it was being driven along Springwood Road towards Springwood. The vehicle was drifting across both lanes and was on the wrong side of double separation lines though the hair pin bends . The vehicle stopped at the Hawkesbury Heights lookout car park where the driver was confronted by other motorists. One of these motorists then assaulted the driver knocking him to the ground before leaving when told police were on the way.

On arrival, police say witnesses informed them about the manner of driving and showed police video footage. The errant driver provided a negative breath test but failed a sobriety test indicating he was affected by other substances (drugs). He was arrested for the purpose of a blood and urine sample, an ambulance attended and treated him for his assault injuries before he was taken to Nepean Hospital under police escort for treatment and obtaining samples for analysis. The driver will likely be subjected to legal action for the offence of Driving Under the Influence upon results of the blood analysis.

The driver, who is 46, sustained significant facial injuries including broken bones as a result of the assault. Police are now seeking assistance in identifying the man's attacker and are requesting anyone who may have dash cam footage or who witnessed the assault to contact Springwood Police Station on 47510299 quoting reference E71373628 or contact Crime Stoppers on 1800333000.
