Four arrested over brutal rape of girl, 16

COIMBATORE, Tamil Nadu, India – India is again being subjected to unwanted publicity over a gang-rape.

The crime is becoming so commonplace ion India it rarely makes headlines, however on the international scene the situation is far different.

The latest atrocity occurred on Thursday in Coimbatore, the second largest city in the state of Tamil Nadu, but details were not revealed until Saturday when some of those involved were arrested.

Police say a Class 11 schoolgirl was celebrating her birthday, in company with her boyfriend at a park in Coimbatore’s Seeranaickenpalayam area. The pair were on their way home after a birthday dinner.

A gang of six men, all in their early to mid-20s confronted the 16-year old girl and her friend. They allegedly set upon the boy and beat him up.

They then allegedly dragged the girl to a secluded place and raped her, police said.

The gang videotaped the encounter and threatened to expose the footage if she reported the attack to the authorities.

On Saturday police said they had arrested four of the men, all aged between 22 and 25, while the search for the other two is continuing. Police say the two men still at large masterminded the assault.

Coimbatore City Police have formed search squads that are combing the city.

The names of the four arrested who remain in custody were released on Saturday. They are Karthikeyan, Rahul, Prakash and Narayanamoorthy.

Police say their investigation into the attack is ongoing.
