Investigation underway into mass shooting near Indianapolis Airport

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana – Breaking news out of Indianapolis.

At least eight people have been shot dead by a lone gunman at a FedEx facility in Indianapolis, the capital of the U.S. midwestern state of Indiana.

A number of people have been rushed to hospital with gunshot wounds, at least one is believed to be in critical condition.

The suspected gunman, police say, killed himself.

“There is no active threat to the community at this time,” Police Department spokesperson Genae Cook said in a statement.

The mass shooting is understood to have taken place around 11:00pm local time Thursday night.

There is no indication as to what motivated the shooting, however investigations are currently underway.

FedEx posted a statement on its website early Friday morning:

“We are aware of the tragic shooting at our FedEx Ground facility near the Indianapolis Airport,” the statement said. “Safety is our top priority, and our thoughts are with all those affected.”

“We are working to gather more information and are cooperating with investigating authorities,” the FedEx statement added.
