Leura to Blackheath bushwalk ends in major rescue

Apr 4, 2019

KATOOMBA, Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia – A 36-year old man is recovering after being rescued on Tuesday night/Wednesday in the Blue Mountains.

The man was undertaking a bushwalk from Mt Hay at Leura towards Blackheath when he came disoriented and lost the track. He also injured his ankle. He was eventually able to get an emergency call only-phone signal and called 000. He did not have the Emergency + app which would have made locating him easier.

As a result, Blue Mountains Police Rescue & Ambulance Special Operations Paramedics entered the bush around 9:00pm Tuesday night and it took them about two-and-a-half hours to reach the man.

His injury was minor but the man was suffering from mild hypothermia as he was not adequately prepared for the walk.

Due to the terrain and weather, the man and rescuers had to camp overnight in the valley.

Late Wednesday morning, once the fog had lifted an Ambulance rescue helicopter was able to attend the scene and winch everyone out.

Police said they were adjudicating whether to issue the man a fine for "Engage in any activity risks safety of self/others."
