Lithgow and Portland pupils pay visit to State parliament

Jun 5, 2019

LITHGOW, Central West, NSW, Australia – A crop of secondary school students have been visiting this week’s sitting of the New South Wales State Parliament as part of the School Leadership Program.

Local MP for Bathurst Paul Toole took time out from his busy schedule on Wednesday to meet with some of the students from his local area, including Tess Sheather and Patrick Woodrow from La Salle Academy at Lithgow and Alexis Cathie and Darion Williams from Portland Central School.

The local member said one of the pleasures of being a State Member is to welcome students to Parliament House.

“The program provides a great opportunity for students from all around the state to represent their school, become aware of democratic processes and experience the environment of Parliament House,” Mr Toole said Wednesday.

“Tess, Patrick, Alexis and Darion were given an insight into what goes on in Parliament and gain an understanding of a wider perspective on leadership and government.”

“There are so many elements to Parliament House, the minute you walk up the steps you enter what is not just an iconic building but what opens up before you and within the walls, is a journey into the history of our State” said Toole.

“Many people who take the time to visit, just like the students today, see a very different aspect and it is one that often creates a feeling of awe, intertwined with a greater understanding of the majesty of the building and of parliamentary procedures.”
