Mammoth rescue of 62-year old man in Central West

LITHGOW, Central West, NSW, Australia – The canyoner who fell while abseiling at Wolgan Valley near Lithgow, in the state’s Central West, on Saturday afternoon has been finally rescued.

The man was winched to safety by Ambulance Helicopter on Sunday morning.

He was flown to Westmead Hospital in a stable condition.

The saga began around 3:30 pm on Saturday afternoon when emergency services were called to Pipeline Canyon, Wolgan Valley, following reports the man, an experienced canyoner, had fallen.

Police were told the 62-year-old man was abseiling when he fell about 4 metres onto his back.

A Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) was activated by a member of the group and rescue crews were dispatched, however, the man could not be extracted due to strong winds.

NSW Ambulance paramedics assisted by officers attached to Police Rescue and the Lithgow Volunteer Rescue Association stabilised the man overnight.

Taking part in the mammoth rescue were Lithgow Police, Rescue 86, Lithgow VRA Rescue, Rylstone Kandos VRA Rescue, Mudgee VRA Rescue, Lithgow Paramedics, Special Operation Paramedics, the Rapid Relief Team (RRT) Lithgow and the Rescue Helicopter.
