Man to re-appear in Bathurst court on Tuesday on murder charge

BATHURST, Central West, NSW, Australia – A 38-year old Bathurst man has been arrested and charged with the murder of a homeless man in the city five years ago.

The man was arrested around 9:15am Monday morning in George Street, Bathurst.

His arrest followed the death of a 68-year old homeless man whose body was found beneath the Denison Bridge at Bathurst on 20 September 2015.

The man was formally identified as Reginald Mullaly, who had been living under the southern end of the bridge in a crude shelter.

Mr Mullaly had sustained head injuries, with the post-mortem examination revealing he had also been stabbed 11 times. He was found with $70 in his wallet. Despite preferring to live on the streets, Mr Mullaly at the time of his death reportedly had $70,000 in the bank, which he had inherited when his mother died.

Officers attached to Chifley Police District established Strike Force Yenna to investigate Mr Mullaly’s murder.

Th man arrested on Monday was taken to Bathurst Police Station and charged with murder.

The matter was heard at Bathurst Local Court later in the day where he was formally refused bail to appear at the same court on Tuesday.
