RICHMOND, NSW, Australia – A woman has been killed and a man airlifted to Westmead Hospital with serious injuries after a head-on collision on the Richmond road  in the early hours of Sunday morning, .

Another three people have been hospitalised with injuries.

The crash scene was spotted by a duty officer from the Hawkesbury Police Area Command who was driving along Richmond Road at Berkshire Park just after 1.15am on Sunday.

He found passers-by assisting at the scene of the collision which involved a Suzuki Baleno and a Nissan Micra.

Police say, three women were travelling eastbound in the Suzuki while two men were travelling westbound in the Nissan Micra, when the crash happened in the westbound lane.

They said a member of the public also on the scene bravely worked to free a young woman from the wreckage as it appeared she had stopped breathing. The man and police immediately commenced CPR and EAR until the arrival of Paramedics. Despite all efforts, the 21 year old woman, believed to be from Queensland, could not be revived.

A front-seat passenger in the Suzuki, a 20-year-old woman from Richmond, was trapped in the vehicle and had to be released by officers from Fire & Rescue NSW.

A 23-year-old woman, also from Richmond, who was travelling in the back seat of the Suzuki, as well as the driver of the Micra, a 61-year-old man from Blaxland, in the Blue Mountains, and his front-seat passenger, a 39-year-old man from Cambridge Gardens, were all able to free themselves from their vehicles.

All four were taken to Westmead Hospital.

Richmond Road was closed for several hours while the scene was examined. Investigations suggest that one vehicle crossed onto the incorrect side of the road, causing the head-on collision.
