Police force in local districts to be significantly increased

Jul 4, 2019

BATHURST, Central West, NSW, Australia – Twenty eight new police officers are to be attached to commands across the Western Region over the next 12 months.

Locally, five officers will join Chifley Police District, while the Central West Police District will pick up 7 new officers including one Child Protection Register Coordinator, and one Age Crime Prevention Officer.

Six officers are being appointed to the Orana-Mid Western Police District including one Child Protection Register Coordinator.

The bolstering of policing in the Western Region will significantly increase the capability of police districts to fight crime.

The 28 additional police being assigned to the Western Region are the first instalment of new police positions during 2019-20. It is the government’s single biggest investment in new police positions for the NSW Police Force in 30 years.

Western Region Commander, Mr Geoff McKechnie, said the announcement is a massive win for Western Region and all of the communities which make up this part of the state.

“It’s a really significant number of additional police that are being added to the region,” he said Wednesday.

“It will greatly increase the capacity of the police districts to meet the ever-increasing demands and will allow Commanders to deploy officers in all proactive roles aimed at preventing and disrupting criminal activity across the region.

“We look forward to filling those new positions. This is an opportunity for country people to consider a career in NSW Police Force and work in regional NSW.”

Additionally, six new Rural Crime positions will be created across the state.

Future allocations of positions, NSW Police say, will be determined based on resource requirement and how best to prevent, disrupt and respond to emerging crime issues.
