KATOOMBA, Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia – Blue Mountains police have thanked the SES and RFS for their assistance in the search for missing 24-year old Italian bushwalker Mattia Fiaschini, whose body was found on Sunday.

“Regrettably it is was not the outcome we had hoped for. We thank our colleagues from the SES and RFS who assisted with searching,” the Blue Mountains Police Area Command said in a statement released on Sunday. “Our thoughts go to his family and friends,” the statement added.

Mattia Fiaschini, 24, was last seen on Wednesday leaving Blackheath Railway Station in the Blue Mountains. He had been living in Surry Hills in Sydney but had gone to the Blue Mountains to do a day’s hiking. He was reported missing on Wednesday after his workmates at a business in Alexandria in Sydney, reported he had not returned from the mountains.

After several days of searching by police, the SES and RFS, his body was located at around 2:30pm on Sunday near the Baltzer Lookout.

An operation is underway to retrieve the body.
