Strong winds force road closures in Blue Mountains

Nov 23, 2018

SPRINGWOOD, Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia – The strong winds that have battered New South Wales, and hit gale force along the Sydney coast have caused widespread disruption throughout the metropolitan area and into the Blue Mountains. Scores of flights were delayed at Sydney airport while nearly thirty domestic flights were cancelled altogether, as the busy airport was reduced to one runway.

Locally, in the Blue Mountains numerous traffic delays have been reported with major disruptions.

The Great Western Highway was closed in both directions on Friday morning after a falling tree toppled power lines, bringing them on to the highway. Traffic was banked up for an extended time while crews worked to repair the power lines and remove the tree from the road.

In another incident, a tree brought power lines down across Hawkesbury Rd at Winmalee late Thursday afternoon (pictured). Traffic was stopped in both directions while power authorities worked overtime to restore the power lines. Again, there were lengthy delays.
