Jan 26, 2019

SYDNEY, Australia – Physical abuse of a child reached a new low on Friday afternoon in Sydney when an 8-week old baby girl was admitted to Sydney Children’s Hospital with bleeding on the brain, fractures to her left leg, and suspected detached retinas.

Detectives from the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad were called to the hospital about 3:00pm Friday.

After discussions with doctors and other personnel, detectives then spoke to the baby girl’s 26-year old father. Following that discussion detectives arrested the baby’s father and he was taken to Maroubra Police Station, in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, where he was charged with recklessly inflicting grievous bodily harm.

The man has been released on strict conditional bail to appear in Waverley Local Court on Thursday 31 January 2019.

An Apprehended Domestic Violence Order (ADVO) has been taken out against the man.

The Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad is comprised of detectives who are specially trained to investigate matters against children and adults, including sexual assault, serious physical abuse, and extreme cases of neglect.

Anyone with concerns about suspected child abuse or exploitation should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page: https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au
