NEWCASTLE, NSW, Australia – A teenage trail bike rider has been killed after his bike clipped a utility in the Hunter Region on Monday afternoon.

The crash occurred around 4:15pm Monday on Torrens Avenue in Cardiff, a town in the City of Lake Macquarie, 13 kilometres west-southwest of the Newcastle CBD.

The teenager, Luke Wasiak, 19 of Cardiff (pictured), was on an unregistered trail bike, and was travelling south when he lost control of the bike after clipping the ute at the intersection of Delasala Drive. He then crashed into a power pole.

The young man was killed instantly.

The 28-year-old driver of the ute was interviewed by police.

Investigations are now underway, and a report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.

Separately, another local resident was killed in an early-morning crash on Tuesday.

Shortly before 7:00am Tuesday a vehicle travelling northbound on Freemans Drive, about 2km south of Cessnock Road at Cooranbong, left the road and crashed down an embankment.

Cooranbong, like Cardiff, is a town in the City of Lake Macquarie, west of the town of Morisset off the Sydney-Newcastle Freeway.

Emergency services were called to the scene. On arrival, police located the driver, and the only occupant in the vehicle, trapped.

He died at the scene and is yet to be formally identified, but is believed to be aged in his 40s.

Officers from Lake Macquarie Police District established a crime scene and have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
