CAIRO, Egypt: A train traveling from Cairo derailed on Sunday, causing four cars to overturn, killing eleven passengers and injuring another 98.

The accident occurred in Egypt’s Qalioubia province north of Cairo, according to the health ministry.

The train was speeding from Cairo to the city of Mansoura when four rail cars derailed about 40 kms north of Cairo.

Witnesses counted at least 50 ambulances transporting the injured to local hospitals.

In March, some 20 people were killed and nearly 200 were injured when two trains collided about 440 kms south of Cairo.

Earlier in April, 15 people were injured when two rail cars derailed some 70 kms north of Cairo.

Kamel El-Wazir, Egypt’s transportation minister, has faced criticism and calls for his resignation. He said his staff is continuing to perform upgrades to Egypt’s aging rail system.
