Mar 17, 2019

WENTWORTH FALLS, Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia – A single vehicle collision occurred on Saturday afternoon in Wentworth Falls, trapping the driver for more than an hour.

About 12:15pm on Saturday police were alerted that a Toyota van heading east on the Great Western Highway at the bottom of Boddington Hill which had run off the road and collided with the sandstone embankment on the northern road shoulder.

The impact caused the van to cross both lanes of traffic and heavily impacted into the concrete jersey barrier.

As a result, the male driver was trapped by confinement and had to be cut free by Fire Rescue.

A Careflight Medical team also responded but due to the bad weather, the helicopter had to land at Glenbrook and the medical team was driven by police to the collision scene.

The driver remained trapped for over an hour until he was able to be released.

Both the driver and a passenger were then taken by ambulance to Westmead Hospital in stable condition.

Police suspect that the driver may have dozed off, causing the collision.

There was traffic congestion caused by having to close lane 2 for the protection of emergency services and due to the debris scattered over the road by the impact. The roadway was re-opened to normal traffic conditions at 2:30pm.
