WTA roundup: Belinda Bencic survives test in Berlin

Fifth-seeded and world No. 12 Belinda Bencic survived a test from Germany’s Jule Niemeier 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 Monday at the Bett1Open in Berlin, Germany.

Bencic, of Switzerland, needed two hours, 12 minutes to dispatch the big serve of Niemeier, who recorded 12 aces but also 11 double faults in the Round of 32 match.

In other action, American Madison Keys defeated Poland’s Magdalena Frech 6-3, 6-4 in one hour, 15 minutes; France’s Alize Cornet topped Amanda Anisimova 6-3, 6-1 in one hour, 14 minutes; and Ekaterina Alexandrova won the all-Russian battle against Anna Kalinskaya 6-3, 6-2 in one hour, three minutes.

Viking Classic Birmingham

Third-seeded Donna Vekic of Croatia made quick work of Great Britain’s Francesca Jones 6-1, 6-3 in just over an hour on the grass courts in Birmingham, Great Britain.

Also, No. 8 seed Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic rallied to defeat Su Wei Hsieh of Chinese Taipei 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 in two hours, one minute.

In other Round of 32 action, Camila Giorgi defeated Italian countrywoman Giulia Gatto-Monticone in straight sets; Tereza Martincova of the Czech Republic topped Australia’s Samantha Stosur in straight sets; Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic needed three sets to beat Heather Watson; American Coco Vandeweghe upset Kristyna Pliskova of Czech Republic; and Caroline Garcia of France needed 2 frac12; hours to defeat Britain’s Harriet Dart.
