100 Kansas lawmakers report envelopes with powder received at offices

Jun 23, 2023

TOPEKA, Kansas: Kansas officials said that state lawmakers have received some 100 letters containing suspicious white powder.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), which counted more than 30 letters as of late last week afternoon and increased the tally to 100 as this week, said no injuries have been reported.

Initial tests on the white powder were negative for dangerous toxins, it said this week.

In emails sent to legislators seen by The Topeka Capital-Journal, Tom Day, director of Legislative Administrative Services, said the Kansas Highway Patrol had informed his office of the letters, which contain a return address in either Kansas City or Topeka.

The letters were sent to legislators at their homes and have been turned over to the KBI and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Day added.
