300 Brazilian Troops Enter Fortaleza to Halt Criminal Gang Attacks

Jan 7, 2019

FORTALEZA, Brazil – After the inauguration of Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, troops were sent to the fifth biggest city of Brazil in order to halt attacks initiated by criminal gangs.

According to Ceera authorities, the attacks were caused by the implementation of stricter measures in prisons, causing anger among the controlling criminal gangs. One of the new rules of local prisons was to block off phone signals in jail.

In Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro’s inauguration, he promised to continuously fight crime in the country. He also gave credit to Justice Minister Sergio Moro’s initiative to send in the troops.

Local authorities have reported that about 50 suspects who have been linked to violence have already been arrested.

While the attacks have sparked panic in Fortaleza, the deployment of troops was already enough to put the population’s mind at ease.
