BOTAD, Gujarat, India – Five teenagers have drowned in a tragic incident in a town along the western coast of India.

Two of the boys got into difficulties while swimming at Krishna Sagar Lake at Botad town, in the west coast Indian state of Gujarat, late Saturday afternoon.

Three other boys seeing their plight, dived into the water to save them; however, according to local police officials, all five boys drowned.

The boys were all aged between 13 and 17 years old. Police were alerted at around 4:30pm Saturday afternoon. They called in a rescue team from the local Fire Brigade, however, by the time they arrived they could only engage in a body retrieval operation.

“Five boys died by drowning in Krishna Sagar Lake outside Botad town today. Two children were swimming in the afternoon when they started drowning,” Batod SP Kishor Balolia said Saturday.

“Three others present at the spot jumped into the water to save them, but they also drowned,” he said.

“Further investigation is underway,” SP Balolia added.

The bodies of all the boys were recovered.

“A rescue team was rushed to the spot, and five bodies were fished out after a 45-minute rescue operation,” Fire Brigade officer Kuldeepsinh Dodiya said Saturday.
