Albanians counting cost of devastating earthquake

TIRANA, Albania – A 6.4 magnitude eathquake has struck the Republic of Albania, in southeast Europe.

At least six people are confirmed dead and 325 have been injured, according to the Ministry of Health and Social Protection.

The United States Geological Survey said the earthquake hit at an approximate depth of 20 kilometers (12 miles) early Tuesday local time.

The epicenter was in the port city of Durres, which is located about 13 miles from the capital Tirana.

A large number of buildings have reportedly collapsed as a result fo the quake.

CNN is reporting that one of those died was seen jumping from the balcony of a building.

Sxchools in Durres and the capital Tirana were closed after news of the earthquake circulated. Schools in the city of Lezhe were also shuttered.

The Albanian government has launched an appeal for the victims and their families.

“The Ministry of Health and Social Protection invites all associates, associations and businesses to offer their assistance in this moment of solidarity to families and citizens in need affected by the earthquake,” a statement released later on Tuesday said, accompanied by the hashtag #ShiperiaSolidare.
