ATP roundup: Evans reaches Adelaide quarterfinals

Daniel Evans of Great Britain reached the quarterfinals of the Adelaide International with a 7-5, 6-2 win Tuesday over Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik in Australia.

Tied at 5-5, Evans won eight of the last 10 games to finish in 75 minutes. Next up is the winner between American Sam Querrey and third-seeded Russian Andrey Rublev, last week’s titlist in Doha.

In the round of 32, America qualifier Tommy Paul won 82 percent of his first-service points in a 6-4, 6-4 defeat of Slovenian Aljaz Bedene. No. 7 seed Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany struck nine aces in a 6-4, 6-2 win against Italy’s Salvatore Caruso. Australians had mixed results, with Jordan Thompson falling 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-3 to Spain’s Albert Ramos-Vinolas and wildcard James Duckworth defeating Argentina’s Federico Delbonis 6-4, 6-4.

Britain’s Kyle Edmund endured a rain delay and survived a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 challenge from Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in a first-round match in Auckland, New Zealand.

Edmund saved four of the five break points he faced and moves on to face No. 7 seed Adrian Mannarino of France or Italy’s Andreas Seppi in the second round.

Canadian qualifier Vasek Pospisil cruised to a 6-4, 6-2 win over Portugal’s Joao Sousa, setting up a clash with countryman and No. 2 seed Denis Shapovalov. Two Americans were knocked out, with Sweden’s Mikael Ymer beating Frances Tiafoe 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 and Australian John Millman posting a 7-6 (5), 6-4 win against Michael Mmoh before rain suspended play for the rest of the day.
