In a showdown of U.S. players, Steve Johnson pulled out a 6-7 (5), 6-3, 7-6 (5) win over fifth-seeded Tennys Sandgren on Monday in opening round of the New York Open at Uniondale, N.Y.

Sandgren was playing his first match since reaching the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, where he went up two sets to one on Roger Federer but blew seven match points in a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, 6-7 (8), 3-6 defeat.

Johnson lost to Federer in straight sets in the first round at Melbourne.

Other first-round winners Monday were sixth-seeded Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia, Andreas Seppi of Italy and Marcos Giron of the United States.

ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament

Sixth-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain came from behind to beat Hungarian qualifier Marton Fucsovics 4-6, 7-6 (1), 6-1 in the first round at Rotterdam, Netherlands.

Bautista Agut lost his serve three times in the opening set, but he faced just one break point over the final two sets, and he saved it early in the third.

Great Britain’s Daniel Evans and Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov advanced in straight sets while Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta edged France’s Adrian Mannarino 7-5, 6-7 (3), 6-4.

Argentina Open

Eighth-seeded Norwegian Casper Ruud, the only seed in action on the first day of the Buenos Aires tournament, beat Spain’s Pablo Andujar 6-2, 6-3 in 72 minutes.

Ruud fired six aces while Andujar had none.

In the day’s tightest match, Argentina’s Federico Delbonis topped Hugo Dellien 1-6, 6-3, 7-5. Uruguay’s Pablo Cuevas and Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro moved on in straight sets.
