Authorities must implement Palermo Protocol: Krishna Bhakta Pokhrel

Jul 22, 2022

KATHMANDU, Nepal – According to Australian Ambassador to Nepal Felicity Volk, because no government or nation can meet the challenge of human trafficking and slavery alone, everyone must take responsibility, and every country must take action to put an end to the barbaric practice.

She called human trafficking and slavery “barbaric” while announcing new Australian funding to support Nepal’s efforts to end trafficking and human slavery. It is heinous, and it has no place in a civilized society.

She was speaking at a Thursday evening consultation on “the Status of the Palermo Protocol Post Ratification,” hosted by The Asian Foundation and the Forum for Women Law and Development.

At the event, Krishna Bhakta Pokhrel, Chairperson of the Federal Parliament’s Law, Justice, and Human Rights Committee, stated that concerned authorities must ensure their duty to implement the Protocol and the commitment made in the international forum.

Following a directive from the Committee, the Home Ministry developed an action plan for Protocol implementation, which should now serve as the foundation for Protocol implementation. In 2020, Nepal ratified the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress, and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Particularly Women and Children.
