SAN FRANCISCO, California: OpenAI is preparing to unveil its next major leap in AI, GPT-5, as soon as August, The Verge reported, citing people familiar with the matter.
Unlike previous releases, GPT-5 is expected to combine multiple specialized models into a single system, a step toward making artificial intelligence more versatile and capable of handling a wider range of tasks.
The release was originally expected this summer. While August remains the target, The Verge noted that OpenAI’s timelines often shift based on internal testing, infrastructure readiness, or responses to competitive developments in the AI space.
CEO Sam Altman had previously said the new model would incorporate OpenAI’s o3 model and other technologies to simplify its lineup. Ultimately, the Microsoft-backed startup aims to merge its O-series and GPT-series models, creating a unified system that can access a broader set of tools and capabilities.
OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
