SEATTLE, Washington: Amazon.com has said it will invest some $7.2 billion in Israel through 2037, as well as launch its Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers there.

Amazon’s cloud services will enable the Israeli government to run applications and store data in local data centers.

“The establishment of the Region will enable us to migrate substantial governmental workloads to the cloud, and we are confident that it will help us accelerate digital transformation in the public sector,” said Yali Rothenberg, accountant-general of Israel, as quoted by Reuters.

Used by companies such as Netflix, General Electric and Sony, AWS is Amazon’s cloud computing platform that provides storage, networking and remote security services.

Amazon said that its investment in Israel will contribute some $13.9 billion to the country’s gross domestic product, and with the expansion of AWS, the service will be available in 32 geographic regions worldwide.
