NEW YORK CITY, New York: Albertsons Companies has recalled several of its store-made deli products after discovering they may be contaminated with listeria bacteria. The move comes shortly after federal health officials warned consumers about similar risks in pasta meals sold at Walmart and Trader Joe’s.
The Boise, Idaho-based supermarket chain said over the weekend it is pulling five deli items made with a recalled bowtie pasta supplied by Nate’s Fine Foods and distributed by Fresh Creative Foods. Affected products include ready-to-eat pasta salads and chicken pasta dishes sold at Albertsons Market, Safeway, Von’s, and other Albertsons-owned stores across more than a dozen states.
Shoppers are urged not to eat the recalled items. Instead, they should discard them or return them to the store for a full refund. Product names, sell-by dates, and identifying details are listed on Albertsons’ website.
“Listeria monocytogenes can survive in refrigerated temperatures and easily spread to other foods and surfaces,” the company warned, stressing that consumers should clean any containers or areas that may have come into contact with the recalled products.
So far, no illnesses have been reported. The Associated Press reached out to Nate’s Fine Foods and Fresh Creative Foods, part of Oregon-based Reser’s Fine Foods, for comment.
Albertsons’ action comes amid broader warnings from U.S. health officials. Last week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture issued a public health alert over two pasta meals potentially contaminated with listeria: Trader Joe’s “Cajun Style Blackened Chicken Breast Fettuccine Alfredo” with September 20, 24, and 27 best-by dates, and Walmart’s “Marketside Linguine with Beef Meatballs & Marinara Sauce” with best-by dates ranging from September 22 to October 1. While no recalls have been announced for those meals, both retailers told customers to stop consuming them.
All three sets of products trace back to pasta supplied by Nate’s Fine Foods.
Listeria infection can be hazardous for older adults, people with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, stiff neck, confusion, and convulsions. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, roughly 1,600 Americans fall ill with listeria each year, and about 260 die.
