Mixed day for Asian stocks, Nikkei 225 in Tokyo does best

SYDNEY, NSW, Australia – Stocks were mixed in Asia on Monday while the major currencies fell slightly against the U.S. dollar.

The Australian stock market was closed for the Queen’s Birthday holiday weekend.

In Japan the Nikkei 225 did best, rising 213.07 points or 0.74 percent to close Monday at 29,161.80.

China’s Shanghai Composite declined 21.11 points or 0.58 percent to 3,589.75.

In Hong Kong the Hang Seng was about 100 points ahead in late trading.

The euro dipped to 1.2108. The British pound was a fraction lower at 1.4106. The Japanese yen was unchanged at 109.70. The Swiss franc softened to 0.8991.

The Canadian dollar eased to 1.2154. The Australian dollar fell Monday to 0.7708. The New Zealand dollar eased to 0.7133.
