Chance search of car in Blue Mountains results in seizure of firearm

SPRINGWOOD, Blue Mountains – A chance search of a car in the Blue Mountains by the Highway Patrol has resulted in the seizure of a .22 calibre rifle, ammunition, a loaded magazine, a rifle bolt, cash and drug paraphernalia, and the arrest of a 42-year old man.

The man was taken to Springwood police station after his arrest, where he was formally charged with possessing an unregistered firearm, possessing ammunition without holding a licence/permit, not keeping a firearm safe, acquiring a firearm without a permit, and possessing a prohibited drug.

The drama began around 8:25pm on Monday night when an officer attached to the Blue Mountains Highway Patrol spoke to the driver of a blue sedan that was stopped on the Great Western Highway near Orient Street, in Lawson in the Blue Mountains.

After initial questioning, police searched the vehicle and seized the contents.

The man arrested, who is from Harrington Park, which is located in the Macarthur Region south-west of Sydney, was granted conditional bail to appear at Penrith Local Court on Thursday 5 March 2020.
