LITHGOW, Central West, NSW, Australia – A man has died during a police operation that took place in Lithgow early Monday morning. The incident prompted the launch of a Critical Incident Investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
The drama began on Sunday at approximately 12:15 pm when officers from Chifley Police District responded to a call reporting a domestic altercation between a man and a woman at a home in Bowenfels, a suburb of the City of Lithgow. Concerns were raised about the man’s welfare as he was believed to be in possession of a firearm.
Upon arrival, the officers briefly engaged with the couple from a safe distance. However, the pair retreated inside the house, locked the doors, and refused to cooperate with law enforcement. To ensure public safety, a perimeter was established, and specialized resources were requested, including Police Negotiators and the Tactical Operations Unit (TOU).
At around 4:20 pm Sunday, shots were fired from inside the home towards the police officers, prompting them to return fire. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the exchange. Despite ongoing efforts to establish communication with the couple throughout the night, they remained unresponsive to authorities.
Earlier Monday at approximately 8:50 am, the 20-year-old woman exited the property and provided information to the officers present at the scene. Shortly thereafter, law enforcement gained entry into the home and discovered the lifeless body of the man. It is suspected that he sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Although his identity has yet to be officially confirmed, it is believed that he was 29 years old.
The woman is currently cooperating with the police investigation to assist in clarifying the events leading up to the incident.
The Critical Incident Investigation Team from Orana Mid Western Police District says it has initiated an inquiry into all aspects related to the case. The investigation will undergo independent scrutiny, including a review by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission, to ensure transparency and accountability.
