NICOSIA, Cyprus – In a sensation development all Israeli youths arrested over an alleged gang rape in Cyprus have been released and the teenage woman who claimed she was raped has been charged with giving false testimony.
As many as twelve young Israeli men, all in the their late teens on vacation in the resort town of Ayia Napa were arrested when the girl from the UK, who is 19, told police she had willingly gone to a hotel with one of them, and afterwards the others stormed the room and raped her.
Police investigators were able to access footage of the events through cell phones taken from the youths, who had videotaped the proceedings.
With the help of the footage, and the return of DNA tests, five of the 12 men were released and allowed to return home to Israel.
The other 7 have now been released after the woman admitted she had sex with a number of the men with her consent.
She told police she was angry because of the recording of the videos and photos of the acts.
Cypriot police arrested the woman on Sunday and charged her with giving a false report.
“As I have argued throughout the process, there was no rape in Cyprus. The young men who went on a vacation that became a nightmare will go home today, and everyone will return to their homes and families. The Cyprus Police conducted a thorough, professional investigation,” Nir Jeslovich, a lawyer acting for some of rthe young Israeli men said on Sunday.
Three of the youths admitted they had sex with the girl but claimed she had consented.
The other 9 denied engaging in any activity with the girl.
