KERALA, India – India’s southern state of Kerala has been ravaged by torrential monsoon rains, that have killed at least 26 people so far.

Torrential rains in the state triggered devastating floods and landslides, that led to buildings collapsing and people being swept away by the force of the floods. 

According to local official Pinarayi Vijayan, over 15,500 people in the state have sought shelter in state-run relief camps.

He added that the situation in the state was very grim and the extreme weather had opened the sluice gates of nearly two dozen overflowing water reservoirs.

Ayannkulu, Idukki and Wayanad areas are said to be worst hit and relief officials have said that nearly 200 army soldiers have now joined rescue workers in these areas of the state.

Officials confirmed on Friday that 26 people had been killed in the floods so far and said fears were high that the death toll will rise.
