TEL AVIV, Israel – Hezbollah has shot down an Israeli drone near Ayta ash Shab in southern Lebanon.
Israel has confirmed the loss of the drone, which was downed inside Lebanon, one kilometre northeast of the Israeli border.
According to the Hezbollah-affiliated Al-Manar news network, the drone was brought down and captured by the militant group on Saturday.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the drone was brought down “during operational activity” in Lebanese territory.
“There is no risk of breach of information,” the Israel Defense Forces statement said, without providing further details.
UNIFIL, the UN agency tasked with keeping the peace on the Israeli-Lebanese border, routinely claims that Israel regulary breaches Lebanese airspace.
“Such violations of Lebanese sovereignty and of resolution 1701 escalate tensions and could potentially trigger incidents endangering the cessation of hostilities between Lebanon and Israel,” United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), Maj.-Gen. Stefano Del Col told Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA) last month.
