I-95 overpass in Connecticut demolished after fuel truck fire

May 8, 2024

NORWALK, Connecticut: A bridge on Interstate 95 in Connecticut that was closed last week after a fuel truck fire has been demolished.

Over the weekend, a live camera operated by the Connecticut Department of Transportation showed excavators and bucket loaders clearing rubble from the destroyed Fairfield Avenue overpass above I-95 in Norwalk.

On May 3 morning, crews began dismantling the bridge, including damaged parts of the roadway, and work was expected to continue through the weekend.

All six lanes of traffic on the interstate, which links New England and New York, were being worked on to ensure that they reopened before rush hour on May 6 morning.

The bridge caught fire after a gasoline tanker carrying 8,500 gallons (32,000 liters) of fuel collided with two other vehicles and burst into flames.

The truck then hit a tractor-trailer in another lane and caught fire, but no one was seriously injured, and no charges have been filed, state police said.

Around 160,000 vehicles travel daily on the affected stretch of I-95.

The state’s congressional delegation will ask the Federal Highway Administration for emergency funds to pay all the expenses for the bridge’s removal and road repairs, which could total some $20 million.
