In centuries-old tradition, sheep, goats travel Madrid streets

Oct 25, 2022

MADRID, Spain: In keeping with traditions, 1,400 sheep and goats took over downtown Madrid on the weekend, as part of a festival to move livestock to their winter grazing grounds.

In a centuries-old reenactment, shepherds herded the animals through the streets of Madrid, as livestock were transferred to lowland winter pastures.

Madrid encompasses part of the 78,000-mile grid of farming paths that cover the Iberian Peninsula.

In Madrid, residents lined the streets to watch the annual ritual, as children reached out to touch the wool of the sheep.

Similar festivals are held in France and California.
