SYDNEY, May 21 (Xinhua) — Commuters in Australia’s Sydney have been told to avoid traveling by train on Wednesday due to major delays after a live power wire fell on top of a carriage on Tuesday.
A 1,500-volt power cable came down on top of a train in Sydney’s western suburbs on Tuesday afternoon, causing a major electricity fault and trapping hundreds of passengers who were eventually freed after several hours.
The incident triggered major disruptions to Sydney’s train network, and the government transport agency for the state of New South Wales (NSW) said on Wednesday that delays would continue throughout the day.
“Passengers planning on traveling on the rail network this morning are advised to avoid travel or use alternative transport if possible,” Transport for NSW said in a statement.
The train involved in the incident was removed from the tracks overnight and the overhead wiring was repaired.
Crews conducted final checks on Wednesday before reinstating power to the six affected tracks shortly after 7:00 a.m. local time.
Transport for NSW Executive Director of Rail Operations Jas Tumber told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation radio that an investigation has been launched into how the overhead wire fell on top of the train.
