Man dies in Australia after falling from hot-air balloon

Mar 21, 2024

MELBOURNE, Australia: A tragic incident unfolded in Melbourne, Australia, as a man plummeted to his death from a hot-air balloon on March 18 morning.

The balloon, originating from the city’s northern suburbs, had been airborne for approximately 30 minutes before the fatal accident occurred.

The man’s body was discovered in a residential area, prompting Victoria state police to cordon off the area to traffic. Remarkably, the balloon managed to land safely several miles away from the scene of the tragedy.

Authorities have stated that they will compile a comprehensive report for the coroner, emphasizing that the incident is not considered suspicious. Investigations are underway, including interviews with the balloon’s pilot, other passengers, and witnesses.

Expressing their condolences, both the National Commercial Hot-Air Ballooning Industry and the Australian Ballooning Federation extended sympathies to the man’s family and friends. “Hot-air balloon baskets are designed with safety in mind, specifically to prevent passengers from falling out accidentally or from any accidental exit,” their written statement said.

“Passengers and the pilot are understandably traumatized by this tragedy and the operator is arranging psychological support and counselling for all affected.”
