Man recovering in hospital after major fall in Blue Mountains

KATOOMBA, Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia – A man remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition after his dramatic rescue in the Katoomba area of the Blue Mountains National Park.

The man sustained neck, back, and ankle injuries after a fall whilst walking at the base of the Giant Stairway where it joins the Dardanelles Pass below Echo Point in the national park. It is understood the fall simultaneously triggered a heart attack.

Attempts were made to winch him out with a rescue helicopter but these had to be aborted. Extra equipment and medication was brought in for the Special Ops Paramedics who provided care for the man throughout the night into Friday.

The man was eventually airlifted out on Friday morning by the Toll Ambulance Rescue Helicopter and, flown to the hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition.
