NEW DELHI, India – A man has been arrested after he allegedly raped a 5-year old girl at the U.S. embassy in the Indian capital of New Delhi on Saturday.
If convicted, under a law recently introduced, he could face the death penalty.
The girl, who doctors confirm had been raped, is in a stable condition.
The arrest of the man, 25, took place on Sunday. The girl’s parents had lodged a formal complaint with police following the alleged attack. They reportedly reside on the embassy grounds, where the father of the 5-year old works as a housekeeper.
The accused man too lives with his parents on the embassy grounds, where his father is an an employee of the embassy. He himself is employed outside the embassy as a driver.
The U.S. embassy, one of the largest U.S. diplomatic missions in the world, is situated in Shantipath, Chanakyapuri, in the center of New Delhi, where many of the main embassies are located.
The embassy is fortified and secured. It is also very large, extending over twenty-eight acres.
According to the Hindustan Times, the families of the girl and the accused man are on good terms. It is alleged the man lured the young girl into his parent’s home in the embassy’s staff quarters, while his parents were away.
When the girl got home she informed her mother of what had taken place. Her parents took her to hospital where doctors confirmed a rape had taken place.
Rape in India has been extraordinarily commonplace.
According to government statistics, one in every fourth person raped is a child. Two years ago India brought in the death penalty for people who rape children, in a bid to curb the rising number of child rapes.
