MEXICO CITY, Mexico – The thirteen people killed in the crash of a corporate jet in northern Mexico on Sunday night had been in Las Vegas for the Alvarez/Jacobs fight.
The aircraft was described as a Challenger 601.
Everyone on board the plane, which was on a flight from Las Vegas to Monterrey in northern Mexico, was killed when it crashed in a remote mountainous area the northern Mexican municipality of Ocampo, in the state of Coahuila. There were ten passengers on the plane and 3 crew members, comprised of seven males and 6 female.
It is understood the passengers, aged between 19 and fifty seven, had attended the fight between champion Mexican boxer Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and the U.S. fighter Daniel Jacobs which was held at the T-Mobile in Las Vegas Saturday night.
The group would have been in a celebratory mood as the Mexican fighter Alvarez won the fight in a unanimous decision, earning him the IBF title to add to his WBA 'Super' and WBC belts.
"Lamento profundamente el terrible accidente del avión proveniente de Vegas. Agradezco de corazón el apoyo de toda la gente que viaja para ver mis peleas. Mis oraciones están con sus familiares," Alvarez tweeted on Monday. The English translation reads: "I deeply regret the terrible plane crash from Vegas. I really appreciate the support of all the people who travel to see my fights. My prayers are with their relatives."
The nationalities of the victims were not disclosed however the surnames of the the thirteen published by the Coahuila government were all Hispanic.
The Newspaper Diario de Yucatan reported that an entire family of five, named as Luis Octavio Reyes Dominguez, a prominent businessman, together with his wife, and their 3 children were among the casualties.
