YANGON, Myanmar – A judge was killed in Yangon’s Mingalar Taung Nyunt Township by an urban guerrilla group accusing him of imprisoning protesters.

San Lin was assassinated on Friday afternoon, according to the Special Task Agency of Burma (STA), which claimed responsibility for the killing.

The Mayangone Township resident was on his way home in a taxi when he was shot. According to the group, he died instantly.

Per a spokesperson, San Lin was targeted because he played a crucial role in sentencing protesters charged with incitement to prison.

“He handled every court hearing involving political cases.” He was the one who sentenced the arrested protesters to prison. We needed to remove him because of public reports about him,” said the spokesperson.

In March, the judge sentenced to three years in prison the wife and mother of a man wanted for joining the Civil Disobedience Movement. The two women are held in Insein Prison and the couple’s three-year-old daughter.

On Friday, STA posted a video of San Lin’s murder and a statement to its Telegram channel. A taxi can be seen in the low-resolution video, and two gunshots can be heard.
